Company History

Horse CarriageThe Beesley Monument and Vault Co. is owned and operated by Wayne and Richard Beesley. They are fourth generation monument builders. Working with their father, David Beesley, they learned stone cutting and engraving skills very early in life. After completing an education at Brigham Young University, Wayne and Richard took over management of the company in 1972.

The Beesley name came to the Utah territory in the mid 1800's when Thomas Beesley and his wife, Ann Carter, lured by stories of prosperity in California, left their native Indiana and started west. They got as far as Provo, Utah, when Ann became ill and they were forced to "stay a spell."

Marble WorksThomas took up farming to begin with, but shortly purchased a monument shop from a Mr. A. O. Fuller, Provo Marble Works, where one of his sons, Thomas Albert Beesley, was an apprentice stone cutter. The name of the shop was changed to Beesley Marble Works, and was run by Thomas Albert and his brother Richard. This was in 1889.

Granite CarvingThomas Albert and his wife Sara Liddiard had eight living children, six sons and two daughters. All his sons learned the monument trade, but because of the depression they had to leave the Provo area in search of other work. Only his youngest son, David, remained at home. In those early years, almost all work was done by hand. The monument business was very difficult in those days. The greatest asset was a good team of mules, muscle power, and a lot of patience. Many of the early monuments were crafted from local stone quarried 25 miles north of Provo during the summer. Then brought to the shop and shaped during winter.

Beesley Monument CompanyIn 1939 the business changed hands from Thomas Albert to his son David Beesley. The name was changed to The Beesley Monument Co. A new location was developed in 1952, across the street from the Provo City Cemetery. This is the present location, and has gone through a number of enlargements and additions as Beesley Monument Co. has grown.

David and his wife Geaniel Vincent had four children, two sons and two daughters. In 1972, Wayne and Richard Beesley took over management and now run a full service monument and memorial service business. Beesley memorials have been shipped all over the world. Beesley Monument Co. is one of the largest memorial businesses in the Intermountain West. We thank you for taking time to view our web page and hope to serve you.
